Tennis: Bombers, Vivettes head and shoulders above the rest in Class 1

All signs point to a John Burroughs-Visitation matchup with a spot in the final four at the MSHSAA girls tennis tournament on the line in October.

The two teams played in the quarterfinals last season with Burroughs winning a very competitive 5-3 match. The Bombers would beat rival Mary Institute-Country Day School in the semifinals and fell just short of the Class 1 team title, falling to Notre Dame de Sion, 5-4.

A Burroughs-Visitation quarterfinal this year would be a classic battle between an experienced, battle-tested team against one with loads of young talent.

Burroughs is the team with the experience, although it will have to do without standout Alex Lehman. Lehman, who is now at Harvard University, capped off an amazing high school career with an undefeated season. The state singles championship was her third in a row.

Burroughs has an amazing string now of seven of the last eight state singles champions in Class 1.
