Krumrey helps Colts qualify

Even with the muddy conditions and slight course alterations, Parkway Central’s Kevin Krumrey felt at home Saturday as he won the Missouri Class 4 District 2 cross country title at Parkway Central High School.

Krumrey found enough solid footing to charge downhill midway through the race and move into the lead. He used the final mile of the race to extend his advantage and finished in 16 minutes, 44 seconds.

Krumrey’s first-place finish was key in helping the Colts secure the fourth and final qualifying spot for next week’s sectional meet at Jackson. Parkway West won the team title with 64 points, eight points better than runner-up DeSmet. Marquette qualified third with 84.

Jacob Lamke led Parkway West in third (17:11), and Bryan Witt captured fifth (17:25).

Parkway Central made it an individual sweep as Emily Sisson claimed the girls’ title in 18:04. Teammate Diane Robison coasted to a second-place finish in 19:36. As the rest of the field came through, Eureka positioned itself to capture the girls’ district title with 50 points. Kirkwood was a close second with 54 points.

Eureka had failed to advance to state last season. “This is a meet we thought we possibly could win, and it’s just icing on the cake that we did,” Eureka coach Kally Fischer said. “We never want to underestimate ourselves after the situation we dealt with last year.”

Eureka’s Aimee Westrich paced the squad with a fifth-place finish in 20:39.

DISTRICT 1

Lindbergh swept the titles at Jackson, winning the girls’ race with 57 points over Summit with 60. The boys cruised to first place with 44 points as six runners finished in the top 17.

DISTRICT 3

SLUH cruised to the boys’ title with a near-perfect 17 points with Caleb Ford, Tim Rackers and Joe Meier taking the top three spots. Nerinx Hall won the girls title behind the second-place finish of Renee Goodenough, and St. Joseph’s Krista Menghini won the race at McCluer North.

DISTRICT 4

Jake Benton captured first place at McNair Park to help Zumwalt North win the team title with 62 points. Howell, led by Leah Krause in sixth place, won the girls’ title with 71 points.

ILLINOIS

Thirty-three local teams in three different classes advanced to the Illinois boys and girls sectional cross country meets around the state next weekend.

In the boys meets, 18 teams will race in the sectionals including O’Fallon, which won the Class 3A Granite City Regional championship with 25 points, and Triad, which claimed its own Class 2A regional title with 58 points. Michael Scolarici of O’Fallon was the Granite winner in 15 minutes, 5.06 seconds at Wilson Park. At Triad, Ryan Todd of Jerseyville was the winner in 16:21.87.

In girls meets, 15 teams will race in the sectionals including O’Fallon, which was victorious at Granite with 34 points. Triad won its own 2A regional with 38 points, Freeburg was the 1A Chester winner with 27 points, and Columbia took home top honors at the 1A Carlinville regional with 70 points.
